Sea Change Farm and Flower Internship. by Chia-Li Sung

December 19, 2023

I did my internship with Sea Change Farm and Flowers in the Fall semester of 2023.

Sea Change Farm and Flower is a woman-run flower farm and floral design shop located in Accord, New York. The farm grows chemical free, pollinator-friendly, seasonal cut flowers for all of their floral design work. Their flowers are also sold at the Hasting-on-Hudson farmer’s market during the growing season.

My responsibilities for this job included:

  1. Selling fresh cut flowers at the Hasting on Hudson farmer’s market every Saturday from 8:30 am to 1pm every Saturday during growing season.
  2. Provide help with harvest, planting, soil, tuber and seed jar labeling, Onsite or in farm wedding/event flower design
  3. Research on newer sustainable growing techniques for cut flowers and foliage.
  4. Research on native /local varieties of cut flowers
  5. Reviewing slow flower/sustainable farming pod casts for newer and better operation and marketing strategies
  6. Testing vase life for unfamiliar foraged wild flowers/foliage
  7. Create design archive for workshop and future event designs.

My experience working with Maggie at the market and with Sam and Censi on the farm upstate taught me a lot about running a sustainable cut flower business. Through assisting Sam at the farm, I was able to see first hand how much solid, hard work it takes to bring a single bloom to be ready for sale. And working at the farmer’s market with a very hard working Maggie allowed to observe the buying habits of customers from different demographics.

Most of all, I now believe firmly, no fresh flowers can be more beautiful and better for the earth than the ones that are sustainably and locally grown.
