Westchester GIS Internship. by Jaclyn Feehan

December 19, 2023

My summer internship with Westchester County IT’s GIS department was a comprehensive and hands-on journey through the intricacies of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and spatial data analysis. Under Ana Hiraldo-Gomez and Courtney Weiber’s guidance, the six-week opportunity began with an immersive experience with the 2023 ESRI User Conference, unveiling the vast potential of analysis and public communication, specifically via Experience Builder. In transitioning from Web App Builder to Experience Builder with the help of Dashboard, I tackled updating the natural resources inventory for a more mobile-friendly interface, and I created an analysis map of the tree canopy of Westchester County using new LiDAR imaging. Encounters with the environmental planning department broadened my perspective on GIS alignment with eco-initiatives and inspired my passion for tree canopy as a climate mitigation strategy among other socioeconomic benefits. I learned to advocate for myself in professional environments to work on projects I was interested in and to further my learning. Overall, it was an enriching experience, illuminating the practical application of GIS in local government, reaffirming my aspirations, and fostering connections within the GIS community.
