Director’s Note
There are two ways to enjoy this show. The first way is how I’ve been watching it since we started rehearsals in October. Picking apart the meanings, trying to figure out what these jokes and characters and songs are saying. There’s something beautiful and profound being said about community, love, family, power, government, corporations, corruption, all buried underneath all the jokes and guts. I’ve spent the past six months finding it, discussing it with my actors, choosing what can help make their performances deeper and realer. The second way to enjoy it is how I’ve been enjoying this show for the past six years, which is just taking it all in and laughing your ass off. I first watched this show during my junior year of high school while waiting for a cast list to come out. I don’t think I had stopped physically shaking that whole week, and I needed something to distract myself, so I put on this musical I had heard some kids in my class talking about. For that 90 minutes, the euphoric feeling of comedy pulled me away from everything and I got lost in Hatchetfield and all of its zany characters.
Ideally, you’re going to fall somewhere between these two. You’ll fall in love with these characters because you see yourself, your friends and family, members of your community in them and their absurdities. Then when things start to go wrong, when the infection kicks in, you’ll also be able to see yourself and the people around you in the heightened and extreme version of community in decay. But, you need one to get the other.
I think comedy could save the world. Ok, that’s dramatic. I think comedy is the key to understanding the world around us, both its beauty, love, and hope, and its scary, angry faults. With that knowledge, that understanding, we can start changing the world. I don’t think you’re going to walk away from this show with a deep understanding of how empires fall and fascism rises, I’d like to think you’re going to walk away with your face hurting from sex and zombie jokes. But, maybe you’ll think of Paul the next time you see something sinister, whether it’s showtunes or tyranny, infecting your town. The nice thing is that in real life, there’s no alien infection taking over your brain. In real life you get to make your own choices, you get to decide whether or not to join the hive. That’s really comforting to me. I love this show, I love the work me and my friends have done on this show, and I hope you love it too.

She would like to thank her friends for making life worth living, her professors for making Purchase feel like home, Lily for making this experience so fulfilling, and most importantly her mother for being the greatest mother she could ask for.
Checkers Bischoff (they/them) (Obnoxious Teen/Professor Hidgens/Cop 1) is a sophomore THP major. Checkers has been involved in acting on stage for 9 years, working in multiple plays and musicals over the last decade. Having developed a slight obsession with Team Starkid in the winter of 2023, when they heard about this production, they were quick to jump on the audition list.
