Purchase Merits Placement in Highly Selective Fiske Guide
The highly selective guide, compiled by former New York Times education editor Edward B. Fiske, includes only a few hundred colleges and universities out of several thousand higher education institutions in the U.S.
The 2020 guide says Purchase “is a perfect place to study the arts and still be able to indulge in academics of all kinds, or vice versa.”
Perfect Place
The guide also praises the “engaged, extremely qualified” professors and the proximity of Purchase to New York City, which the guidebook calls “ideal” for the “creative, socially conscious students, who take full advantage of the endless cultural and professional opportunities the city has to offer.”
“There’s a raw energy that exists on campus—in the students and professors—that I don’t think many colleges have,” says a literature major quoted in the guide.
“We’re pleased that once again Purchase has been nationally recognized for its excellent academic and artistic offerings and its engaged faculty,” says Caitlin Read, dean of enrollment management. “We’re proud to offer a high quality, affordable education in the liberal arts, sciences, and performing and visual arts while providing what Fiske calls ‘a personalized, diverse education unique within the SUNY system.’”
The Fiske Guide to Colleges, which has been published for more than 35 years, provides a subjective and systematic look at colleges, giving readers the real personality of the institutions based on a wide range of subjects. Research, accompanied by testimonials from students, offers helpful and honest information about academic climates and courses.
The List Continues
In addition to the Fiske recognition, Purchase has been included on other significant college ranking lists.
Purchase is among the best National Public Liberal Arts Colleges listed in the 2019 edition of U.S. News & World Report’s Best Colleges. Ranked as one of the Top Ten Public Liberal Arts Colleges, Purchase is also on the list of most ethnically diverse liberal arts colleges.
Princeton Review named Purchase in its Top 384 Colleges in the nation, praising the college for its excellent academic programs in the liberal arts and sciences and performing and visual arts and including it on its list of the most LGBTQ friendly colleges. Home to the acclaimed Performing Arts Center, Purchase was also ranked number one on the list of Best College Theaters.
