Susie Essman ’77 Returns to Curb Your Enthusiasm

Comedienne and actress is best known for her foul-mouthed character on the HBO hit series.

Susie Essman ’77 (urban studies) always wanted to be an actress, but a lack of confidence held her back. After years spent honing her stand-up skills in New York City comedy clubs (she performed more than 400 shows in 1987 alone), she broke through in 2000 as colorful and foul-mouthed insult queen Susie Greene on HBO’s hit series, Curb Your Enthusiasm. The show has returned this month for its 9th season.

In a 2011 feature for PURCHASE magazine, Essman says she had her heart set on  Purchase after her first visit, both for its artistic bent and its age. She was drawn to a place so new that the students could create their own traditions because none existed.

She was photo editor at The Load, the now defunct student newspaper, and frequented her friends’s performances.
