Summer in India Info Session
Purchase College conducts a six-week program in Dharamsala, India. Dharamsala is in northeastern India in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh, ‘land of the snowy peaks.’ It is known for its spectacular mountains and pine forests, valley meadows, and glacial rivers. The area is peppered with pilgrimage sites and many Hindu and Buddhist temples and monasteries. This program will take students to a corner of India which has few study abroad programs. The Norbulingka Institute, dedicated to teaching and preserving Tibet’s artistic culture, is our collaborator in the project and will be our class site.
Students will learn about Buddhism and Tibetan culture. This area is where the Dalai Lama and other Tibetan scholars, teachers and practitioners fled as exiles from their homeland. Students will bring Tibetan Buddhist philosophical literature to life through active exchanges with the Tibetan population. They will have an extraordinary opportunity to become acquainted with a distinctive landscape and culture and will contribute to this culture through service learning and active dialog.
