Gaiutra Bahadur is the author of Coolie Woman: The Odyssey of Indenture (2013), winner of the Caribbean Studies Association’s Gordon K. and Sybil Lewis Prize and shortlisted for the Orwell Prize and the Bocas Prize for Caribbean Literature. Her essays and reporting have been published in many places, including The New York Times Book Review, the New York Review of Books, and The Nation. She is a two-time winner of the New Jersey Council on the Arts Award for Prose and has received fellowships from, among other organizations, the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture and the W.E.B. Du Bois Institute at Harvard. Formerly a staff writer at The Philadelphia Inquirer and The Austin American-Statesman, Bahadur is an assistant professor in the Department of Arts, Culture and Media at Rutgers University-Newark.
