Artist in the Studio: Hector Sonon

Printmaking Studio, Room 1009, Visual Arts Building
Join us in the printmaking studios to meet artist-in-residence Hector Sonon, Beninese fine artist and political cartoonist, as he presents his art and demonstrates works-in-process.

Participants will experience first-hand the intaglio printmaking process while observing the printing of the artist’s edition. Students will give tours of the expansive printmaking facility, which is one of largest in the country.

Sonon began his career as a press designer at 17 years old, during Benin’s military regime. Self-taught, Sonon’s first caricatures were published in the first major independent newspapers in Benin and Togo.

He then studied drawing and painting at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts and the École Supérieure des Arts Saint-Luc in Brussels, as well as in various drawing and comic workshops.

Sonon has received a number of prizes for his work, including the Prix Découverte, Libreville/Gabon, the 1st Africa e Mediterraneo Prize, Bologna/Italy, and Best Album at the Algerian Comics Festival.

This event is part of the inaugural (T)HERE: A Global Festival of Art, Culture, and Ideas Celebrating Benin.
