Graduation Pledge at Purchase

Purchase College is one of many colleges across the country helping graduates develop a commitment to social and environmental responsibility.  The class of 2007 was the first to participate in the Graduation Pledge of Social and Environmental Responsibility. The graduating class of 2008 became the second at Purchase to take the Graduation Pledge and become part of the nation wide Graduation Pledge Alliance.

Seniors received a card with following pledge:

"I pledge to explore and take into account the social and environmental consequences of any job I consider and will try to improve these aspects of any organizations for which I work."

To show their support for the graduation pledge, seniors wore green ribbons at Commencement.  Pictured here is graduating senior, Molly Gawler (Dance) during the procession. (Photo courtesy of The Office of Student Affairs).

Over 300 students from the class of 2008 chose to take the pledge!

Equally as exciting as the number of students who participated in the Graduation Pledge, was the willingness of President Schwarz to include the Pledge in the Commencement Bulletin, as well as his opening speech at the ceremony.

President Schwarz, pictured at right, displayed his support of the graduation pledge by wearing the green ribbon himself.  In fact, the entire platform party showed their support for environmental and social responsibility by wearing green ribbons! In addition,  Commencement speakers participated and showed their support for the graduation pledge.
