IRS Tax Information
The Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997 (the “ACT”) provides many tax benefits for persons who pay higher education costs for themselves and members of their families. These tax benefits include the American Opportunity tax credit for your first four years, and the Lifetime Learning tax credit (for upperclassmen, graduate and continuing education students) or a tuition and fees deduction.
Under the provisions of the Act, the College is required to report to students and the Internal Revenue Service (the “IRS”) certain information concerning status as a student on a tax statement called form 1098-T, Tuition Payments Statement. In order to properly file this form, Purchase College needs a student’s legal name as listed on the Social Security card as well as the correct Social Security Number or Tax Identification Number (TIN). Federal law requires that students provide correct legal name and social security number information so that the College can include it in the information return, which will be filed with the IRS.
Accordingly, students should confirm with the Enrollment Services Office that their correct legal name and SSN are on record. If not, students should provide correct social security numbers using Form W-9S and return it to the Enrollment Services Office. Pursuant to privacy laws and regulations, the social security number that you provide will be used for IRS tax reporting purposes only and will not be used as an identifier in the Purchase College student records system.
The College cannot provide form 1098-T to students unless a valid Social Security Number and matching legal name are provided. We also encourage students to consult the IRS web page for more information on form 1098-T. Please make sure to use the required Form W-9S, do not email your SSN.
