Purchase College, State University of New York, and Westchester Community College are pleased to announce the inauguration of the Purchase College School of Liberal Studies extension site at the Westchester Community College’s Peekskill location starting Fall 2006.
“Purchase College is pleased to partner with Westchester Community College in providing local access to quality education for residents in Peekskill and its surrounding towns,” said Purchase College President Thomas J. Schwarz. “Our goal is a convenient and affordable way for students to earn their bachelor’s degree and we are proud to serve this community.”
Westchester Community College graduates (and others who have the equivalent number of credits for an associate’s degree) can work toward their Purchase College bachelor’s degree in Liberal Studies at Westchester Community College, Peekskill. In most cases, students may complete graduation requirements with two years of full-time study. All coursework is offered at Peekskill (except the Senior Capstone course offered on the Purchase campus).
With the working adult in mind, courses are offered in the evening from 6:30-9:50 PM. Advisors work closely with students to map out their plans for graduation. Students still in the early phase of their associate’s degree are encouraged to consult with an academic advisor to plan ahead, seek advice on their community college courses, and learn how to transfer smoothly. Andrea Morville, Assistant Dean of Continuing Education at Westchester Community College, states, “This in an exciting venture for the colleges, and more importantly, a great opportunity for our students to advance their education while staying close to home. This partnership helps the college fulfill its mission of providing access to quality education to all county residents.”
The interdisciplinary Liberal Studies degree at Purchase helps students develop an appreciation of the questions, issues, and perspectives underlying the liberal arts. A liberal arts education prepares students for today’s changing marketplace by teaching them how to think, how to learn, and how to communicate effectively—skills they will need, no matter what their eventual employment. Liberal Studies graduates move into such fields as education, advocacy, health, social work, advertising, and customer service. They work for corporations, businesses, government, and nonprofits. Many students also continue their education in a variety of graduate programs. The agreement between the colleges makes it easy for students who have completed their associate degrees in Liberal Arts/Humanities and Liberal Arts/Social Sciences (among others) to transfer easily to the Purchase program at Peekskill.
Students may transfer up to 90 transfer credits (a maximum of 75 lower level credits) to Purchase College. To learn more about this program, please go to www.purchase.edu/ce, to “Liberal Studies Extension Sites” located on the left menu. Information Sessions will be held on: May 4 and June 8 at 5:30 PM at the Peekskill location, 27 North Division Street, Peekskill, New York.
