Professor Kamala Sankaram’s Techno-Infused Opera
Composition Professor Kamala Sankaram looks to expand opera audiences through the use of techno music and familiar language.
In an interview with the Observer, Sankaram states, “I think that there is so much baggage attached to the word “opera” because of how we think we’re supposed to experience it…[but] I think that many different kinds of people from many different backgrounds would enjoy opera if they could get over the first step of coming to the performance.”
Her new opera Looking At You premieres at the HERE Arts Center from September 6 - 21 and explores “the way capitalism, the erosion of online privacy, and the quest for individualization collide in our post-Y2K society”
