Debut Novel by Hal Hartley Named Among Year’s Best

Kirkus Reviews calls Our Lady of the Highway one of the Best Indie Books of 2022.

In its review of the debut novel by indie film maverick Hal Hartley ’84, Kirkus Reviews writes, “Hartley, a celebrated indie film director, writes in a confidently cinematic style, filling the novel with quirky, sharply drawn characters; multiple viewpoints and flashbacks; exquisitely carved, imagistic vignettes…and hilarious deadpan dialogue.”

Our Lady of the Highway, released in June, then made Kirkus Reviews’ Best Books of 2022 list. In a Q+A with the author, read how the novel began as a script for a TV series and if there may be a sequel.

And Hartley describes the original inspiration for this story:

“It was something about nuns making beer.”
