David Gallo, a former student at Purchase College, received the 2006 Tony Award for Best Scenic Design of a Musical for his work on The Drowsy Chaperone. Gallo received the award at the 60th Annual Tony Awards ceremony on June 11 at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. This is Gallo’s second Tony nomination. Last year he was nominated for Best Scenic Design of a Play for Gem of the Ocean.
In his acceptance speech, Gallo thanked “every teacher I have ever had—all of them,” and said this “very odd and quirky show [was] the most fun that I have ever had in my time on Broadway.”
Gallo was the set designer for Thoroughly Modern Millie, You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown, King Hedley II and Epic Proportions, among many others.
