Purchase Symphonic Winds Celebrates 20th Century America

The Symphonic Winds concert on May 4 will feature the music of Aaron Copland, Samuel Barber, Philip Glass and Arnold Schoenberg at 7 PM in the Performing Arts Center. Graham Ashton conducts. Details.

Featured performers are Nathan Bellott and Daniel Glaude who will perform saxophone solos of Facades by Philip Glass.  Other selections include Aaron Copland’s Outdoor Overture, Samuel Barber’s Adagio, and Variations by Arnold Schoenberg.

 

Conductor Graham Aston is Professor of Trumpet and Chair of Brass at Purchase College and a soloist who has appeared with orchestras around the world.  He has also recorded numerous film soundtracks including Batman, and Dangerous Liasons.

 

 He has appeared as a trumpet soloist with the BBC Symphony, London Symphony, Philharmonia and Royal Philharmonic Orchestras and has played on commercial albums with Paul McCartney, Barbara Streisand, Phil Collins, Van Morrison and Elvis Costello.  As a composer and arranger, Mr. Ashton has written music for film, theatre and concerts and had made numerous recordings.

 

In addition to teaching and performing, Professor Ashton has designed a range of Graham Ashton Mouthpieces made by the Griego Mouthpiece Company. He is also a consultant to the Getzen and Edwards Instrument Companies whose trumpets he helps design and plays exclusively.   

 

The Symphonic Winds ensemble is comprised of wind, brass and percussion instrumentalists who are musicians from the Purchase College School of the Arts Conservatory of Music.
