She is an artist who sees her design process as “sophisticated dreaming.” Vivian Beer’s innovative furniture designs blur the line between contemporary design, craft, and sculpture. Working primarily with steel and automotive paint, her creations celebrate beauty and power and are influenced by flags, clouds, tides, car fenders, feathers and corporate logos. Her pieces are often anthropormorphic forms that subtly transform the comfortable terrain of the domestic landscape. As a metals artist she uses hot and cold techniques, including blacksmithing to create some of the forms in her designs.
While at Purchase, Ms. Beers will create a body of work that will be exhibited next summer.
Beer has an undergraduate degree from the Maine College of Art and a masters’ degree from the Cranbrook Academy of Art. She has exhibited at the Mint Museum, SOFA Chicago, and the International Contemporary Furniture Fair.
The Windgate Artist in Residence Program advances the careers of practicing artists and is an ongoing program in applied design with an emphasis in studio furniture. The program helps prepare Purchase students for careers as professional artists and strengthens their awareness of the significance of applied design.
