Senior Rory Freeman graduates in December and has already joined MOMIX, which was among the ten world renowned and emerging dance companies participating in the sixteenth annual Fire Island Dance Festival July 17-18.
MOMIX, described as delightful, acrobatic and wacky, performed a one-time only performance at the festival kick-off party for Leadership Supporters.
A waterfront stage with Great South Bay as a backdrop provided a stunning setting for all the performers, including the Alvin Ailey Dance Theatre, Marcelo Gomes, principal with the American Ballet Theatre, Joffrey Ballet Chicago principal Farbrice Calmels, Boston Ballet, Camille Brown, Mark Stuart Dance Theatre and San Francisco Ballet Principals Yuan Yuan Tan and Damien Smith performing choreography by Christopher Wheeldon. Premier dances by Travis Wall and Stephen Petronio were presented.
The Fire Island Dance Festival is the premiere cultural event on Fire Island and is produced by and benefits Dancers Responding to Aids (DRA), a program of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights Aids. Denise Roberts Hurlin, a Purchase alumna, is a co-founder of DRA.
