Musical "For The Birds" Debuts April 29,30 & May 1

The ancient Greek comedy by Aristophanes gets a 21st century face lift in "For The Birds" the new musical which premieres at Purchase College on April 29-30 & May 1 in the Humanities Theatre.  Performances are at 8 PM.  Tickets are $5, $3 with Purchase ID, and are available at the door.

 

The full-length, two-act play is entirely written and produced by Purchase College students, including a cast of 18, a production team of 10, and a pit orchestra of 7 musicians. 

 

Two travelling philosophy salesmen find themselves saddled with a mysterious stranger and exiled from everywhere in ancient Greece except the mythical kingdom of the birds.  With their last chance at success, they try their luck at building a brand new utopia in the sky.  But what happens when even paradise becomes too big to fail?

 

“For the Birds" is written by Kristopher Wellman, a junior in the dramatic writing pogram.  In 2007, Wellman was awarded a Level 1 prize in playwriting by the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts, and will be featured in the upcoming HBO documentary “Master Class"alongside playwright and mentor Edward Albee. Music and lyrics are by junior jazz performance major Andy Roninson.  Roninson is a member of the prestigious BMI Lehman Engle Musical Theatre Workshop in New York City, where he was awarded the 2010 Robert B. Sherman Scholarship.

 

“For the Birds" features choreography by Alana Kyriak and Selena Coburn, set design by Sasha Piltser, costume design by Beth Scorzato, lighting design by Michael Burgo, and stage manager is Lisa Finger.
