Trumpeter Tom Harrell Soloist With Purchase Latin Jazz April 15

Harrell has recorded 24 albums as a leader and will perform his original music. Arturo O' Farrill conducts the Latin Jazz Orchestra at 7 PM in the Performing Arts Center.

Trumpeter Tom Harrell, widely recognized as one of the most creative and uncompromising jazz instrumentalists and composers of today will be a guest artist with the Purchase Latin Jazz Orchestra on April 15, 7:00 PM at the Performing Arts Center Purchase College.  Box Office is 914-251-6200 or online at www.artscenter.org.  Tickets are $20.

 

Harrell has recorded 24 albums as a leader and is known for his warm burnished sound on trumpet and flugelhorn.  He will perform his own music including “Moon Valley,” “Humility,” “Chasin’ The Bird,” a Charlie Parker tune which Harrell arranged for the big band in 1964, and “Kirghiz,” which Harrell first performed with the Danish Radio Big Band.  His just released  CD “Roman Knights” is the third album featuring current members of his quintet.

 

Harrell divides his time between writing projects, live performances and recordings.  He actively tours with his quintet around the world.  He was Artist in Residence at the Barga Jazz Festival and the Vincenza Jazz Festival last year. Television broadcasts of his concerts have included

The San Javier Jazz Festival in Spain the Chivas Jazz Festival in Brazil among others.

 

A graduate of Stanford University with a degree in music composition, Harrell is a prolific composer and arranger for Carlos Santana, Cold Blood, and many others.  His composition and arrangement of “Humility” was recorded on Arturo O Farrill’s 2008 album “Song for Chico,” which won a Grammy for Best Latin Jazz Album.   He has worked with important figures in jazz including Stan Kenton, Woody Herman, Dizzie Gillespie, Gerry Mulligan and others. He is a frequent winner in Down Beat and Jazz Times magazines’ Critics and Readers Polls and a Grammy nominee.

   

Composer and Grammy winner Arturo O’Farrill conducts the Latin Jazz orchestra.  He heads the Latin Jazz Program at Purchase College and performs regularly at leading clubs and concert halls with his Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra.  Mr.O’Farrill has received commissions from Jazz at Lincoln Center and the Big Apple Circus among others.  He has also composed music for films.   

 

Purchase Latin Jazz Orchestra brings the next generation of professional musicians to the concert stage through bold and innovative concerts. The musicans from the Purchase College School of the Arts Conservatory of Music study with some of the leading jazz performers and educators in the area.
