The concert’s theme is pictures from three different exhibitions.  According to Adelson “Painting pictures with music has long been a preoccupation of composers.

The March 22 concert will explore three of music’s most famous pictures, beginning with Mendelssohn’s “Hebrides” Overture, inspired by his visit to the Scottish islands.  The program continues with Debussy’s “Nocturnes” which are subtly impressionistic tone paintings.  Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony concludes the evening; it is an intense self-portrait of the composer’s devastatingly honest view of this own inner life.”

The Purchase Symphony Orchestra features students from the internationally renowned Conservatory of Music at the Purchase College School of the Arts.  The faculty includes some of the finest musicians performing today.

Michael Adelson is a conductor, composer, writer and educator who is on the conducting staff of the New York Philharmonic. He has conducted the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the New York Philharmonic and many other ensembles in Europe and America.
