Purchase Repertory Theatre presents The Balcony, Jean Genet’s  masterpiece, November 6-14 in the Purchase College Performing Arts Center.  The Director, A. Dean Irby is a veteran Broadway actor and a director of Off-Broadway as well as regional and college theatre.  He is on the faculty of the Conservatory of Theatre Arts and Film.

The Balcony, Genet’s first commercially successful play, is set in a unique brothel where ordinary men act out their fantasies of power, dressing as bishops, judges, and generals, while outside, a revolution overthrows the national government. 

 

Genet’s startling absurdist masterpiece connects sex, the illusion of power, crime, and perversity in an unforgettable theatrical vision.

 

Irby, a professional director for the past 20 years has directed more than 60 stage productions for the New York Shakespeare Festival, Arena Stage, Crossroads Theatre and Arizona Civic Theatre, among others.  He is recipient of two Audelco Awards for his direction of the original production of Home for the Negro Ensemble Company and Boogie Woogie and Booker T for the New Federal Theatre.  He is a former acting coach for the Cosby Show and for Malcolm Jamal Warner of the NBC situation comedy Here and Now.

 

The Purchase Repertory Theatre is a company of actors from the Purchase College Conservatory of Theatre Arts and Film who perform bold and exciting interpretations of classic and contemporary plays while bringing to the stage the next generation of actors, designers and technicians.
