Professor Arturo O'Farrill Receives Music Commission

Date Released: 8/26/2009

Arturo O' Farrill and his Latin Jazz Orchestra have received a commission to compose a work of music in honor of Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor

Arturo O'Farrill's  commission to honor Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor will be premiered at Symphony Space on November 5 with a second performance on November 6.

"I am so grateful and excited to receive this commission," said O' Farrill.  The Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra's mission is to preserve, perpetuate and innovate the genre of Afro-Latin Big band Jazz through performance.  What better way to fulfill that mission than to honor the first Latina to be appointed to the Supreme Court."

The commission was arranged by Symphony Space where O'Farrill's orchestra is in residence, the Bronx Museum of the Arts, and RD Rice Construction, which will fund the commission.

Professor O'Farrill heads the Latin Jazz Studies program at Purchase and conducts several concerts annually with Purchase students.
