Purchase Symphony Orchestra in Concert with Maestro Michael Adelson February 20

The Purchase Symphony Orchestra performs Beethoven's Violin Concerto in D Major, Op 61 with soloist Byron Hitchcock, a winner of the 2008-09 Concerto Competition, and the Symphony No. 1, Op. 39 by Sibelius on February 20 at 8 PM at The Performing Arts Center. There will be a pre-concert performance of "Environment is Everything" at 7:30 PM featuring six soloists from the Conservatory of Music's Voice and Opera Studies program performing. Isabela Bendik, Soprano, performs Hector Berlioz' "Villanelle"; Jasmine Thomas, Soprano, performs Robert Schumann's "Du bist wie eine Blume";  Kevin Dilone, baritone, performs Paolo Tosti's "Aprile"; Skylar Saltz, soprano, performs Claude Debussy's "Green"; Samantha Kelley, soprano, performs Hugo Wolf's "Der Gartner"; and Michael Meyers, baritone, performs Mozart's  "Ein Madchen oder Weibchen" from Die Zauberflote.

Maestro Michael Adelson will conduct the Purchase Symphony Orchestra.

He is conductor of the Auros Group for New Music and a cover conductor for the New York Philharmonic. Since debuting with the Los Angeles Philharmonic in 1992, he has conducted the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, the Helsinki Philharmonic, Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, and New Jersey Symphony Orchestra.

Equally at home in the opera house, he has led Scandinavian productions of Puccini's Turandot and La Boheme.  In Stockholm he conducted the world premiere of Qu Xaio-Song's Oedipus. He has led world premieres at the Venice Biennale and the Ultima Contemporary Music Festival in Oslo, and had conducted new American music in Europe and Asia as well as in the United States.

Michael Adelson is also an active composer who has lead workshops in conducting and orchestral technique for educators, as well as for college and pre-college musicians in the US and Europe.  He has written and conducted youth concerts with the Helsinki Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, and New Jersey Symphony Orchestra. He studied at the New England Conservatory, the Mannes College of Music and graduated suma cum laude from Joma Panula's conducting class at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki.

The Purchase Symphony Orchestra features students from the School of the Arts, Conservatory of Music led by outstanding guest conductors.
