Former Purchase Student Melissa Leo Stars in Frozen River, Now Playing in Limited Release

Melissa Leo stars in the critically-acclaimed film, Frozen River, capping a long and varied career since her student days at Purchase. The movie won the Grand Jury International Pick at Sundance, and it has also been honored at the Seattle Film Festival and the Nantucket Film Festival.

Leo stars as Ray Eddy, a single mother who is enticed into the fast-money world of border smuggling between Canada and the United States. The drama explores the challenges faced by single mothers who can’t find work beyond minimum wage jobs… and what happens when the law catches up with them.

Since 1984, she has appeared on the long-running soap opera “All My Children,” and has been featured in numerous films such as 21 Grams. She was on “Homicide: Life on the Street” from 1993-1997, and also appeared in shows such as “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation,” “The L Word,” and “Law & Order.”

A New Yorker, Melissa is currently working on Dear Lemon Lima, due in 2009.

Frozen River is showing in limited release around the country, and there is already talk of it receiving Academy Award nominations.
