The Fenimore Art Museum in Cooperstown, N.Y. is now showing the exhibit Gilded Lions and Jeweled Horses: The Synagogue to the Carousel co-curated by Purchase College Art+Design Professor Murray Zimiles. The exhibit, on view through September 1, is the cover story of Heritage, the magazine of the New York State Historical Association.
This groundbreaking exhibition tells the story of a little-known aspect of American carousel history and its connection to Jewish values. Approximately 100 splendid and rarely exhibited artworks are on loan from public and private collections from the U.S. and Israel.
The exhibit was first shown as a major presentation by the American Folk Art Museum in New York City earlier this year.
Murray Zimiles is an artist and Kempner Distinguished Professor at Purchase, where he has taught drawing and printmaking in the School of Art+Design since 1977.
