Date Released: 4/25/2008
Psychology Professor Anthony Lemieux was awarded a $73,455 grant from the US Department of Homeland Security’s National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism. Over the next three years, Professor Lemieux will conduct international experiments related to why support for terrorism does or does not develop among people living in parts of the world that have been exposed to ethnic conflict. His component is the experimental core of a larger ($775,000) grant to a prestigious research team based at the University of Maryland and comprised of researchers from that institution, Michigan State University, the University at Albany and John Jay College-CUNY, in addition to Purchase. The team’s efforts are aimed at a rigorous identification of factors leading to terrorism and to the desistence of terrorism by creating an extensive universe of cases for comparisons and in depth analysis.
