Purchase College junior Cyrille-Aimée Daudel, a Jazz Studies major, will record her debut CD in Switzerland beginning March 13. The recording is one of several prizes Ms. Daudel received as the winner of the 2007 Montreux Jazz Festival Vocal Competition last July in Switzerland.
After performing with an all-star rhythm section, she was awarded first prize by a panel of judges headed by jazz vocalist Al Jarreau. Her prizes include 10 days of all-expenses-paid studio time at Zurich’s Balik Music Farm and a spot on the 2008 Montreux Jazz Festival performance schedule.
She will be recording with a jazz quintet composed of five other Purchase College students for an album tentatively titled As Long As You’re Living. The recording is slated for a summer 2008 release.
Cyrille-Aimée Daudel was born in Fontainebleau, France, and raised in the nearby town of Samois sur Seine, the birthplace of gypsy jazz legend Django Reinhardt. Daughter of a French father and a Dominican mother, Ms. Daudel was nurtured from birth by her hometown’s rich jazz scene. At the age of 18, she was chosen as one of less than 20 contestants culled from nearly 150,000 applicants to join the cast of the French reality TV show, Star Academy 4, but instead elected to travel to the United States to study jazz at Purchase College. Ms. Daudel, now 23, has already amassed an impressive list of performance credits including stints with such New York City jazz mainstays as Joel Frahm, Doug Weiss and Spike Wilner, as well as Latin heavyweights Jorge Taveras, Guarionex Aquino and Gilberto Santa Rosa.
