David Humphrey, Painter

Visual Arts Building

David Humphrey paints scenes of overwhelming, almost oppressive endearment based in a suspiciously idyllic suburban fantasy world.  He draws upon a set of images, including puppies, kittens, affluent children and snowmen, meant to convey feelings of innocence and security, and his depictions reference the exaggerated flatness with which such figures are often presented.  But Humphrey pushes these distortions well beyond the bounds of traditional kitsch into a realm where darkness and perversion seem to be just over the horizon.  In addition to painting, Humphrey has produced sculpture and installation.  He has received a number of grants and fellowships, including two from the National Endowment for the Arts, and his work is in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, among other major institutions.
