Purchase College, State University of New York, is located at 735 Anderson Hill Road, Purchase, N.Y.
As Professor and Director of Jazz Performance at the Purchase College Conservatory of Music, Faddis serves as a mentor to scores of young musicians.
Called "the world's greatest trumpeter" by Time Out New York, Faddis was just 17 when he skyrocketed to success as a member of Lionel Hampton’s big band. Meeting Dizzy Gillespie at 15 proved to be a pivotal beginning of a unique friendship that spanned over three decades. Gillespie declared of Faddis, “He's the best ever, including me!”
In his early career, Faddis also was lead trumpet for the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra at the Village Vanguard. He performed with Gillespie at the White House in 1982, and was hired to put Gillespie’s big band together. Faddis formed his own group, the Jon Faddis Jazz Orchestra, in 2003 -- as a successor to the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band. Its legacy of artistic diversity, superbly adventuresome arrangements and musical excellence makes the orchestra one of the preeminent ensembles worldwide.
The performance by the Jon Faddis Jazz Orchestra is part of Purchase College’s year-long, cross-campus initiative to explore the rich cultural heritage of Africa and the African Diaspora.
