Purchase College Presents Music and Dance for the Holiday Season

Purchase College offers holiday fare for the entire family this season.

New York City Ballet Principal Dancers Ashley Bouder and Jared Angle join the Purchase Dance Corps, and over 150 local children in Nutcracker ‘07, a traditional version of the enchanting holiday classic, November 30 and December 1-2 in the Purchase College Performing Arts Center.

The award-winning Purchase Opera presents Giancarlo Menotti’s holiday classic Amahl and the Night Visitors December 7-9 in the Recital Hall of the Music Building.

The Purchase Symphony Orchestra and the Purchase College Chorus present Solstice Celebration, December 14 at the Purchase College Performing Arts Center.

The Nutcracker ‘07 ballet is based on the classic tale by E.T.A. Hoffman and set to music by Peter Tchaikovsky. This production features choreography by Conservatory of Dance faculty, with artistic direction by former New York City Ballet dancer and Conservatory ballet faculty member Bettijane Sills. Performances are Friday, November 30 at 7:15 PM; Saturday, December 1 at 2 PM and 7 PM; and Sunday, December 2 at 1 PM and 5 PM. Amahl and the Night Visitors explores definitions of poverty and love, the search for spiritual identity, and reminds us to be thankful for the grace that comes to us at the turning of every corner. The production features Voice and Opera students from the School of the Arts, Conservatory of Music, under the direction of Jacque Trussel. Performances are December 7 at 7:30 PM, December 8 at 7 PM, and December 9 at 2:30 PM. Tickets are $15 general public and $5 for children under 16; cash or check only, payable at the door. Solstice Celebration, with associate conductor Hugh Murphy, features Praetorius’s Tänze aus Terpischore, arranged for brass ensemble by Graham Ashton; Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 4 in G Major, BWV 1049, for solo violin, two flutes, strings and continuo; and Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 9, Lobgesang, for Orchestra, Chorus and soloist.  The performance begins at 8 PM.
