Purchase Dance alumni Lynn Peterson and Kate Mehan perform with SYREN Modern Dance, the company they co-founded, at the White Plains Performing Arts Center November 17 at 8 PM. The company is comprised of eight dancers, all graduates of the Purchase College Conservatory of Dance. They will perform Abravanel, an evening-length piece they premiered in Manhattan in February to sold-out houses at the Ailey Citigroup Theater.
SYREN, a modern dance company, also includes dancers Kriten Antzoulis, Jeffrey Lyon, Beth Edwards, Chelsea Glassman, Isaac Gonyo and Lindsay Lee.
Abravenel, choreographed by Kate Mehan, journeys through the movement, music and history of the Sephardic Jewish people. The dancers share with the audience this remarkable story of struggle, travel and new beginnings. Abravanel resonates with a wide variety of cultures and with its dynamic cast and rich musical score, it is a feast for the eyes and ears.
Ms. Mehan and Ms. Peterson received their BFA degrees in Dance from Purchase in 2002, and founded their company later that year. They are co-artistic directors of SYREN, and perform and choreograph for the company. The company has performed throughout the Northeast at the Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival (Inside/Out Series), the Ailey Citigroup Theater, White Plains Performing Arts Center, University Settlement, Whitewave, the Remember Project, DUMBO Arts Under the Bridge Festival, Dogs Days of Dance Festival, SWEAT Outdoors Series, Choreographers' Workshop, CT Meets NY Dance Fest and Dansereye 3.
