Choreographer Nelly Van Bommel, Mamaroneck, N.Y., a graduate of the Purchase College School of the Arts, Conservatory of Dance, brings her NØA DANCE company to the Reverb Festival 2007 3rd Edition at the Ailey Citigroup Theater/Joan Weill Center for Dance on November 9. Ms. van Bommel is a co-founder and curator of the Reverb Dance Festival, which presents an eclectic range of works by emerging and established choreographers and companies at this annual event.
Since the New York City debut of her company NØA DANCE, Nelly van Bommel has become one of the most talked about choreographers to emerge from the French-American dance scene. In April she won the Milwaukee Ballet’s “Second Genesis International Choreographic Competition.” As the winner, she received a contract to create an original work for the Milwaukee Ballet for the 2007-2008 season.
Her work has been presented at major festivals and venues throughout New England including Joyce SoHo, Danspace, P.S. 122, Dance Theater Workshop, the Merce Cunningham Studios and the Duke on 42nd Street, to name a few. “Nelly van Bommel has talent, a sense of passion and intensity…and a quirky sense of humor…she seems to be working her way smartly up the American dance ladder,” wrote John Rockwell last year in the New York Times.
Raised in France by Dutch parents, she trained and studied in France and from 1997-2002 performed throughout Europe and North Africa with French choreographer Claudine Peny. In addition to her performing career, Ms. van Bommel also attended Université de Paris 8—Sorbonne and Université de Bourgogne and graduated with an MA in Performing Arts Aesthetics and an MA in Comparative Literature. She moved to New York City in 2002 and received the Outstanding Master of Fine Arts Award upon graduation from the Purchase College Conservatory of Dance. She is an alumna of Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival from which she was awarded a full scholarship to study with choreographer Susan Marshall during the summer of 2005.
In addition to working as a choreographer, Ms. Van Bommel is also on the staff of the Purchase College Conservatory of Dance.
The Reverb Festival continues on November 10. Tickets are $20 and can be reserved in advance by calling 212-280-3468 or emailing firstname.lastname@example.org. The Joan Weill Center for Dance is located at 405 West 55th Street in New York City.
