Jazz Studies Freshman Joel Luxenberg Performed at the Monterey Jazz Festival

Date Released: 10/11/2007

Jazz Studies freshman Joel Luxenberg, trumpet, performed as part of the Monterey Jazz Festival’s 2007 Next Generation Jazz Orchestra, the Festival’s internationally-renowned high school all-star big band. Luxenberg graduated last spring from the Arts & Communication Magnet Academy in Beaverton, Oregon.

The NGJO nurtures the future generation of jazz stars through a program that selects the best and brightest high school jazz musicians in the country. This year’s 20-piece jazz orchestra features members selected from 17 high schools in 10 states.

The orchestra is under the direction of Paul Contos, the renowned saxophonist and flautist.

This summer, the NGJO embarked on a summer performance tour starting with combo gigs in New York City at Sweet Rhythm and then performing as the full orchestra at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola. The group then headed to Paris for performances at the Hilton Arc de Triomphe.

The NGJO performed throughout the weekend at the Monterey Jazz Festival in September with a final performance on the main arena stage with 2007 MJF Artist in Residence Terence Blanchard.
