Violinist Calvin Wiersma Performs a New Work by Composer Suzanne Farrin in a Faculty Recital Oct. 10

Purchase College Conservatory of Music professor Calvin Wiersma, violin, performs a new work by Suzanne Farrin, chair of composition, in a Faculty Recital on October 10 at 8 PM in the Recital Hall of the Music Building. Calvin Wiersma has appeared throughout the world as a soloist and chamber musician. He is currently a violinist with the Manhattan String Quartet and the Purchase Conservatory Quartet. He was a founding member of the Meliora Quartet, and winner of the Naumberg, Fischoff, Coleman and Cleveland Quartet competitions. He was also a founding member of the Figaro Trio. He has performed at the summer Chamber Music Festivals in Vancouver, Rockport, Portland, Crested Butte, An Appalachian Summer, Music Mountain and the Aspen Music Festival.

Suzanne Farrin’s music has been performed across the United States and in Europe and South America at such venues as Carnegie Weill Hall, Symphony Space, Atlantic Center for the Arts, Festival Nuevo Mundo (Maracaibo), Philadelphia Fringe Festival and others. She has been commissioned to write pieces for combinations as diverse as Irish bagpipes and string quartet to solo pieces and works for vibraphone. Her work has been performed by Tanya Bannister, Steve Mackey, Jason Treuting, Ken Crilly, Antoinette Tamestit, Mark Stewart and David Schotzko. Ensembles such as the Arditti Quartet, So Percussion, Neithermusic, ICE, nonjzero and Traces have performed her music on the concert stage.
