New media artist Mariam Ghani will discuss her work in the context of her on- and off-line interactive documentary Kabul: Reconstructions at a New Media Lecture at Purchase College on October 3 at 6:30 PM in the Neuberger Museum. Ms. Ghani will discuss diasporic networks, the politics of reconstruction, collaborative practice, critical cartography, web-based performance and public dialogue, and the art of asking and answering the right questions referencing Kabul: Reconstructions (www.kabul-reconstructions.net).
A Brooklyn-based artist, Ms. Ghani works in video, installation, photography, new media, performance, text and public dialogue. She is a New York Foundation for the Arts and Soros Fellow, and has been an artist-in-residence at Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, Eyebeam Atelier, Smack Mellon and the Akademie Schloss Solitude in Stuttgart. She has received grants and commissions from the Experimental Television Center, the Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation, Turbulence and the Longwood Digital Matrix.
She holds a BA in comparative literature from New York University and an MFA from the School of Visual Arts. She teaches in the Department of Art, Music and Technology at Stevens Institute of Technology in New Jersey.
