Purchase College Opens Rehabbed, Resurfaced Tennis Courts

Date Released: 6/22/2007

Purchase College unveiled its newly renovated, rehabilitated and resurfaced tennis courts to the community on June 15, 2007.

Purchase College, State University of New York, and Future Stars, which runs specialty camp programs for families in Westchester, Manhattan and Long Island, recently partnered to rehabilitate the school’s 12 existing tennis courts, while adding two new courts and three new outdoor basketball courts at the Purchase campus, located at 735 Anderson Hill Road.

Future Stars funded the renovations of the courts, spending over $500,000 to complete the project, which includes new fencing around the perimeter of the courts and a Deco Turf surface. New posts and nets have also been installed on the courts, and all lighting has been repaired.

“All of the courts are now Deco Turf and painted green and blue just like the National Tennis Center, which hosts the U.S. Open,” explained Charles Van Dercook, co-owner of Future Stars. “To further enhance playability, six of the courts are lit for evening play.

The architects of the renovations, Sanok Design Group of Brewster, NY, began working on the project in early spring. Future Stars unveiled the new courts to their campers June 15. The courts are also available for use by Purchase College students, faculty and staff.

Beginning in the fall, the courts will be used by the Purchase College tennis teams, when the women’s team begins its intercollegiate season as the newest member of the Skyline Conference.

The women’s and men’s tennis programs at Purchase are both coming off strong seasons, and the new courts will not only provide the teams with top-of-the-line surfaces, but also help with recruiting, according to Purchase Athletic Director Ernie Palmieri.

This summer, an estimated 3,000 youth will use the new courts.

There are many planned uses for the new facility including corporate leagues, corporate outings, private lessons, weekend junior tournaments, fall and spring instructional programs for juniors and adults, open court rentals, after school programs and more.

Future Stars has been running camps at Purchase College for nearly 20 years. The camps have run the gambit from tennis to soccer to sports and computers to basketball to baseball and softball, as well as circus arts, swimming and lacrosse.

The courts are available to the general public for a nominal fee. No membership is required. For information, call Future Stars at (914) 251- 6541.
