Joanne Kivela Tillotson, Purchase, N.Y., associate professor of biology at Purchase College, SUNY, has been elected an associate director of Sigma Xi, the international honor society of science and engineering.
Her election as associate director came at the society's recent annual meeting and student research conference, held this year in Detroit. Her three-year term begins July 1, 2007. She will represent Sigma Xi's Baccalaureate Colleges Constituency Group.
Tillotson received her B.S. at the University of Dubuque and her Ph.D. in biochemistry at Michigan State University. She is treasurer of the Purchase College Chapter of Sigma Xi.
Founded in 1886, Sigma Xi has about 65,000 members and more than 500 chapters in North America and overseas. The society publishes award-winning American Scientist magazine and sponsors a variety of programs that support science and engineering. More than 200 Sigma Xi members have received the Nobel Prize.
