Hector Sonon began his career as a press designer at 17 years old, during Benin’s military regime. Self-taught, Sonon’s first caricatures were published in the first major independent newspapers in Benin and Togo. He then studied drawing and painting at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts and the Ecole Supérieure des Arts Saint-Luc in Brussels, as well as in various drawing and comic workshops. Sonon has received a number of prizes for his work, including the Prix Découverte (Libreville/Gabon, 1999), the 1st Africa e Mediterraneo Prize (Bologna/Italy, 2008), and Best Album at the Algerian Comics Festival (2012) for his book Toubab ou pas toubab.
