Recent Graduates on Optional Practical Training (OPT)

During your OPT period, you continue to hold F-1 status sponsored by Purchase College and your F-1 record remains active in the government database, SEVIS. Please remember that the responsibility to report most information related to your OPT rests primarily with you, but the Office of International Programs and Services will continue to support you during this period, and remain responsible for maintaining your record and updating your information in SEVIS. To make the required updates listed below, please complete the OPT Information and Update Survey.

Within 10 days of the start of your OPT period, you must report your:

  • Start/end date of your employment
  • Employer name and address
  • Your residential address
  • A statement of how the employment is related to your course of study

Within 10 days of any change in the following areas:

  • Residential or mailing address
  • Employer name and address
  • Legal Name
  • Loss of employment
  • Change of Status (i.e. to H-1B)
  • Transfer to another F-1 program

OPT Travel

In addition to documentation needed for international travel (and recommended for domestic travel outside the Greater New York City Area), please be sure carry on your person (not in checked baggage):

  • Valid Employment Authorization Document (EAD)
  • Evidence of a job offer or resumption of employment. If you are returning to the U.S without evidence of a job offer, you may be questioned at the port of entry.

Recommending Purchase College

Want to spread the word about your Purchase experience? If you are headed back to your home country and have plans to visit your old high school, let us know. The Office of International Programs and Services would be happy to work with the Admissions Office to collect and mail you some Purchase brochures. Please give us 2 week’s notice so that we can collect these items and mail them to you in time. Ask us about how you might be eligible for a Purchase College T-shirt!
