Daija Russell is a passionate higher education professional. She has a profound love for spoken word and poetry and has been a performer for over 10 years and counting.
More About Me
Her family realized this gift early on and took her to audition for several commercials. From musicals, to plays, and everything in between Daija always had a strong love for performing arts. As time went on she became a locally known poet in the Hudson Valley under the name Queen Dee.
At SUNY Orange’s 61st Commencement ceremony, Daija delivered a life-changing, history making speech as the student speaker. While 2,500 people filled the gymnasium, 350 people streamed online, and 450 other devices were connected to the College’s first-ever live online video of the commencement, she received a history making largest and warmest ovation.
After graduation, she would go on to win The Sleuth Pro Poetry Slam in 2012. From there she became a qualifying poet at the Grand Slam Team XV Selection at SUNY Oneonta. With her team by her side, she competed in the College Unions Poetry Slam International (CUPSI) and continued to master her skillsets.
Regardless of where life took her, her love for higher education continued to grow and she pursued her Master’s Degree in Higher Education Administration at Stony Brook University.
Currently, the Scholarship Coordinator at Purchase College, Daija continues to nurture her passion for higher education. Although she loves being behind the mic, her mission is to impart her gift of public speaking and performing to her students and assist them with reaching their greatest potential.
