Thomas J. Schwarz
President Thomas J. Schwarz became the fifth president of Purchase College in 2002.
In 2004, he headed the first-ever effort to establish a Purchase College brand, with the tagline, “Think Wide Open.” Under his leadership, the college has experienced a significant increase in improved retention and graduation rates; academic restructuring, with an emphasis on greater interdisciplinary study and collaboration; enhanced communication among all campus constituents; and renovations to existing structures and the main campus plaza, as well as many new construction projects, all reflective of the campus commitment to environmental and social responsibilities.
Additionally, President Schwarz’s tenure has embraced entrepreneurship in an effort to create new revenue streams—such as Park2Fly and the Senior Learning Community project—that support the mission of the college.
Prior to Purchase, President Schwarz was a partner at the law firm of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom where he was National Practice Leader of the Litigation Department and the founding partner of the firm’s Committee on Diversity.
He earned a Juris Doctor degree from Fordham Law School and a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics from Hamilton College.
