Visiting Assistant Professor of Language and Culture
Alfredo Garcia-Pardo is a Visiting Assistant Professor of Language and Culture and teaches in the Spanish language program. He also teaches courses on linguistics, translation, culture and Spanish as a second language. In his classes, he combines his formal linguistic training with a communicative and dynamic approach to teaching.
More About Me
Alfredo recently defended his doctoral dissertation in Linguistics at the University of Southern California. His research focuses on the connection between structure and meaning in natural language, with an emphasis on Spanish. He has presented and published work on the temporal meaning of lexical verbs, the morphology of participles and the grammar of auxiliary verbs. He is currently conducting joint work on a peculiar structure in Spanish that syntactically resembles wh-questions but is actually a yes/no question in disguise. The core of Alfredo’s research addresses the broader comparative question of what the languages of the world have in common and how they differ. In so doing, he endeavors to provide formal models of grammar that can account for such differences and similarities.
Alfredo also holds an M.A. in Spanish as a second language from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. There he acquired training in the communicative method to language teaching, which emphasizes meaningful interactions among learners in real-life situations as a natural means to acquire a second language. At USC, he has taught Spanish language extensively at all levels of instruction, as well as linguistics and translation. Alfredo’s courses are grounded on the pedagogical credo that student engagement, both inside and outside the classroom, is paramount for a successful learning experience.
