Lecturer in Music
Dr. Ian Antonio is a percussionist noted for consistent excellence in a diverse array of musical situations. His breadth of experience - concertizing across 4 continents with a wide variety of chamber ensembles, orchestras, experimental rock bands, avant-garde theater companies, and as a soloist, conductor, and educator - has led him to develop a unique sound and approach to both performing and teaching.
Ian is a founding member of the piano and piano and percussion quartet Yarn/Wire. Described as “mezmerizing” and “dynamic” by the New York Times, the trailblazing ensemble has performed at prestigious venues across the globe, including the Barbican Centre, Brooklyn Academy of Music, Edinburgh International Festival, Lincoln Center, and Shanghai Symphony Hall.
Dr. Antonio is also a member of the collective Wet Ink, the percussion group Talujon, and from 2003-2012 was a member of the difficult-to-categorize trio Zs. He also frequently performs with the International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE), Albany Symphony, SEM Ensemble, and Theatre of a Two-Headed Calf. His playing can be heard on the Carrier, Nonesuch, Warp, Social Registry, and Kairos record labels, among others. He endorses Vic Firth sticks and mallets, Pearl Adams instruments, Paiste cymbals and gongs, and Black Swamp accessories.
