Thomas J. Schwarz
President Thomas J. Schwarz has served as the fifth president of Purchase College since 2002.
In 2004, President Schwarz headed the first-ever effort to successfully establish a Purchase College brand, with the tagline,“Think Wide Open.” Under President Schwarz’s leadership, the college has experienced a significant increase in improved retention and graduation rates; academic restructuring, with an emphasis on greater interdisciplinary study and collaboration; enhanced communication among all campus constituents; renovations to existing structures and the main campus plaza, as well as new construction projects, all reflective of the campus commitment to environmental and social responsibilities.
Additionally,President Schwarz’s tenure has embraced entrepreneurship in an effort to create new revenue streams, such as Park2Fly and the Senior Learning Community project, that support the mission of the college.
Before coming to Purchase College, President Schwarz had a distinguished career as a partner at the law firm of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, where he was National Practice Leader of the Litigation Department and was the founding partner of the firm’s Committee on Diversity.
President Schwarz earned a BA in economics from Hamilton College and a JD from Fordham Law School.
