President Thomas J. Schwarz Announced His Retirement Plans
President Schwarz, who is one of the longest serving presidents in the SUNY system, has announced that he will retire at the end of the 2018–19 academic year.
Schwarz was named the fifth President of Purchase in 2003. Under his leadership, the college has experienced a significant improvement in retention and graduation rates; has increased its endowment from approximately $35 million to $87 million; and has undergone significant renovations and commissioned new structures, all reflective of the campus commitment to environmental and social responsibilities.
The search for a new president has already begun. SUNY policy dictates that one student serve on the presidential search committee. The PSGA is currently devising a method for student nominations and will submit three names to the search committee for consideration. The chair of the committee, who is appointed by the SUNY chancellor, will select the student to serve.
