Doctor and Educator Colm McCarthy ’09 Named Young Leader

Receives award from the Canadian Medical Association

Montreal native Colm McCarthy ’09 (biology, chemistry) recently earned the Canadian Medical Association’s Award for Young Leaders for 2017.

McCarthy is currently chief resident physician in the Division of Orthopaedic Surgery at Ontario’s McMaster University.

He’s also enrolled in their master of health science education program, where he’s researching a competency-based tool for orthopaedic surgery. He earned his MD from McGill University in Montreal in 2013.

While at Purchase, he worked with Professor Lee Ehrman, whom he refers to as his “academic mother.” It was she who urged him to pursue teaching as well as medicine.

“Her mentorship was critical in shaping my career as an educator. I always wanted to go to medical school, but Lee pointed out my love of teaching and encouraged me to pursue both careers,” he says.

In addition to the many awards he’s received to date—for leadership, expertise, collaboration, and professionalism—he also earned Purchase’s Outstanding Senior Awards in both biology and chemistry in 2009.

“We are all a product of our environment and SUNY Purchase and Lee have shaped my career in such positive ways,” he adds.

He remains in touch with her to this day.
