Whether you just graduated high school or you’ve taken a gap year (or more), if you have not yet attended college you should apply as a freshman. Even if you’ve taken college-level courses in high school, Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) exams, you’re still a freshman.

Who We’re Looking For

It takes a certain nature to thrive at Purchase. While we seek to enroll academically qualified students with a consistent record of achievement in a challenging high school curriculum, we also seek students with grit—the determination to strive and succeed.

Successful students at Purchase are highly motivated, intellectually curious, and deeply engaged in our community as well as the world at large. Our students are passionate about their goals and persevere to achieve them. They are daring—willing to take calculated risks to achieve more when they create works of art, engage in research and scholarship, or take on internships. They are driven to succeed and exhibit an entrepreneurial spirit in creating that success for themselves. In addition, Purchase students are often socially aware and will take an active stand for what they believe in.

All candidates are encouraged to pursue a rigorous college prep curriculum throughout their entire high school career, enhancing their college preparation through honors and Advanced Placement coursework. The Office of Admissions maintains a holistic review process with a focus on the quality of your academic program, your cumulative academic average, your Think Wide Open Statement, and supplemental information.

Typical Grades

Generally, successful freshman applicants have earned a GPA of 3.0 (or 85 on a 100 point scale).

Purchase does not require scores from the SAT or ACT exam (with exceptions), though applicants are given the option to submit them. It is recommended that test scores be submitted only if it is believed to benefit the application. For applicants who are considering submitting scores, we typically prefer the following:

  • SAT: 1170 total score
  • ACT: 24 Composite

Students who are required to submit test scores include:

  • Applicants who are homeschooled
  • International students, who will need to provide a TOEFL score
  • Applicants who attended secondary schools that provide only narrative evaluations rather than some form of grading scale

Think Wide Open Statement

Purchase College’s motto is “Think Wide Open.” It’s our way of learning, teaching and being and so much more. By choosing Purchase, students make a conscious decision to join an intense community with a deep respect for individuality and diversity and an unparalleled environment of creativity and innovation.

As an applicant, we want to know what Think Wide Open means to you. All students submit either an essay, video or other creative work (poem, song, visual artwork, etc.). It should be original and should connect to Think Wide Open broadly or specifically. Videos and creative works should include a brief introduction or statement that helps contextualize your submission for the viewer/reader.

Transfer Requirements:

The decision on your application will be based on the quality of your academic program and your cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) from all colleges attended. Generally, successful transfer applicants have earned at least a 2.5 GPA. A cumulative GPA between a 2.0 and 2.5 will be considered based on evaluation of prior course selection and performance.

We recommend that all candidates successfully complete 24 college credits prior to applying and pursue a challenging curriculum at their prior institution(s). Transfer students who have completed fewer than 24 college credits will be evaluated on their high school coursework  in addition to their college coursework. All admission decisions are conditional, contingent upon the successful completion of all college coursework.

For admissions requirements for students applying to programs in the visual and performing arts, see the specific application instructions for the desired program below.

Requests for Additional Information:

When deemed necessary, the Office of Admissions may request additional information, such as, but not limited to, senior SAT or ACT exam scores; first quarter or midyear senior grades; etc., Such requests are made directly to the candidate. It is the responsibility of the applicant to submit all requested information to the Office of Admissions promptly upon request.

If you’ve already earned a baccalaureate degree and are interested in pursuing a second bachelor’s degree in a different subject area, you must apply to the Purchase College, Office of Admissions, as a transfer student. We strongly encourage you to contact the Advising Center at 914-251-3990 as early as possible to discuss your course selection and degree options.

    Portfolio Content Requirements

Twelve to Twenty Examples of Work

Your visual portfolio should consist of 12–20 pieces, including observational drawings (see below) of your best and typically, most recent work.

It should consist of a variety of media and approaches and can include a mixture of assignment-based projects, self-directed work and sketchbook work. Strive to give us insight to your creative process and personal interests!

The portfolio does not need to be major-specific and can include any type of work including painting/drawing, printmaking, sculpture, digital work, etc.

Please do not include work that copies photographs, uses the grid system, or directly replicates any other artist’s work (including replicating anime drawings, cartoons, or video game character designs).

Regardless of major, please include both of the following assignments among your work:

    1. One self-portrait in any medium
    2. Two drawings from direct observation (not from photos)

Please submit two to three examples of completed coursework, related to your desired major, to assist in future course placement.

    Additional Portfolio Information

    Submitting Work

We realize that applicants are preparing portfolios for consideration to many different institutions and that you may already have a compiled PDF of work. Although we do ask that you submit individual images via our Admissions Portal, should you chose to upload a pre-made PDF, please make sure to adhere to the portfolio requirements and recommendations detailed on this page.

    Label Your images

Please list title, media, dimensions (where applicable) and provide a description of each piece. It is helpful to our faculty reviewers for you to clearly label which item corresponds to which of the portfolio assignments.

    Detail shots

If it is appropriate, you may provide detail shots of particular works. Be sure to indicate if an example is a detail shot.

    Multiple Views

If a single image does not adequately display your work (e.g. a large sculpture) you may include more than one image.
