Launched in 2014 with the slogan, “Let’s make at least one student better off without making any other student worse off,” the PImU is intended to provide students taking economics courses with additional and alternative instruction, tutoring, and mentoring. The Pareto Improvement Unit is located in room 1018 of the Social Sciences Building, where students can also consult copies of the textbooks used in different economics courses. No appointments are required. Feel free to meet with the tutors in person or to contact them by email.

The name and slogan are references to Vilfredo Pareto and his concept of optimality, which states “that the optimum allocation of the resources of a society is not attained so long as it is possible to make at least one individual better off in his own estimation while keeping others as well off as before in their own estimation.”

Economics tutoring sessions take place in the Social Sciences Building, Room 1018 (A.K.A. “Corner Solution”).
