About the Certificate Program
The evidence that geospatial technologies have been among the fastest growing industries in the U.S. over the past decade surrounds us. Everyone from emergency responders to coffee-shop owners are using geospatial technologies to inform their decisions about how to best deliver public services and improve marketing effectiveness.
Learning how these technologies work, how they can be managed most efficiently, and how geospatial data can be analyzed to make informed decisions will enable you to work effectively in a geospatial world. The GIS certificate program is designed for professionals who are looking for a geospatial edge in an increasingly global and technological world.
The certificate consists of four courses—one required course and three specialized electives. It is particularly well-suited for:
- public planners and consulting engineers
- conservation and land management organizations
- utility and transportation professionals
- location-based entrepreneurs
Earn your noncredit certificate in as few as two (2) semesters. Students may take individual courses without commitment to the entire program. The courses are face-to-face courses held in a Purchase College computer lab. Students who successfully complete the four required courses are awarded a certificate by the School of Liberal Studies & Continuing Education, reflecting 21 continuing education units (CEUs).
Continuing Education Units (CEUs)
Continuing education units (CEUs) are a way of measuring and officially recognizing the time and effort you have put into your education for your job or profession. As you update your credentials, are in line for a transfer, promotion, or evaluation of your current position, or want to make a vocational change or explore a new career, the CEUs recognize student achievement in noncredit learning activities.
The School of Liberal Studies & Continuing Education awards CEUs upon completion of a noncredit professional certificate program. The number of CEUs earned is reflected on each certificate. One CEU represents 10 contact hours of participation in an organized continuing education program. CEUs are measured as whole units.
Note: Certificate programs must be completed within three years unless approved by the director of continuing education.
There is a $25 nonrefundable registration fee paid once per semester, in addition to the tuition. For all courses except Geographic Information Systems (GIS), a noncredit tuition discount is available for Purchase College matriculated students, employees, and alumni, New York State GIS Association members, and students who pay in full by the early registration deadline.
Geographic Information Systems (GIS), offered by the environmental studies program in the School of Natural and Social Sciences at Purchase College, is available on a noncredit basis at a reduced tuition rate, plus applicable fees. The noncredit option is limited to students who are not enrolled in a degree program at Purchase College. Students who register for the noncredit option do not receive college credit or grades.
