Description:

A woodcarver since he was 8 years old, Newell was enticed by the romance of studio furniture after discovering James Krenov’s A Cabinetmaker’s Notebook. Eventually studying with Krenov, Newell began his career in Chicago after graduating from the College of the Redwoods Fine Woodworking Program in 1990. Now located in Fort Bragg, California, after spending 10 years in Atsugi, Japan (where he still maintains a studio), Newell’s originality and finesse have established him as one of the pre-eminent studio furniture makers working today. Represented by Pritam & Eames Gallery, his work is in numerous private collections and a growing number of museums. Newell is the Fall 2011 Windgate Artist in Residence at the Purchase College School of Art+Design.
